Moving ahead with Vedic Astrology in February, 2023

At this time, people are looking to rebuild either their lives on the whole, or parts of it that matter most to them. In many regions, the threat of COVID-19 has transformed into some sort of alleviation. Those who have adhered closely to the higher realms of classical Jyotisha/ Vedic astrology in the past or are desirous of doing so now for good reason, would know to some extent that it is this art which has the potential to guide discerning human beings in this new world order in which there is much that is new, and a lot that is to be viewed with fresh eyes.

The two major outer planets, Guru/ Jupiter and Shani/ Saturn are both transiting in dignity. Guru is strongly placed in Meena Rashi/ Pisces, the own sign of the Devaguru and Shani has now moved to Kumbha Rashi/ Aquarius, initiating the Sade-Sati for Meena Rashi and commencing its culmination for Makara Rashi/ Capricorn.

Meena Rashi are blessed in that as their personal lives come under their own scrutiny and the pressures of Saturn, they have the sage guidance of Devaguru Brihaspati to inculcate in them a direct awareness of the value systems required to navigate potential crises. For the populace at large, the strength of Saturn, and that too in a Karmically loaded sign such as Aquarius is a pointer to caution and restraint because Shani is the only Graha/ planet who does not give positive results when He is strong. And yet a weak Shani does not help, since the life areas He rules will suffer due to the weakness of their ruler. So, when it comes to natural malefics, it is often a Hobson’s choice that people are faced with.

Saturn afflicts Mesha Rashi/ Aries with His Graha Drishti especially since Rahu is placed there. Natives of Aries Lagna or Rashi and others who for some reason need to pay attention to Aries in their horoscopes are advised to avail of necessary advice because storms are brewing and some would have already felt these in their lives. Usually, Shani Drishti is sufficient to cause great distress and till He afflicts Rahu in this sign, the difficulties are exponentially escalated, both in the particular and universal sense. Notably, Rahu and Shani also have mutual Rashi Drishti/ sign aspect on each other, bringing the conflicting energies of Aries ruled by Mars, and Aquarius ruled by Shani and Rahu into play.

At this particular time, the Dwi-Guru Yoga formed in Meena Rashi is highly auspicious and brings the best insights from both the worlds, the metaphysical and the pragmatic, from the two Gurus. Shukra/ Venus is also exalted in Pisces making this the perfect time to benefit from the timeless words of the sages, since Meena is the sign of the Rishis, the last sign of the zodiac representing both release and release from ills due to blessings and wisdom both. Such a conjunction can temper other stresses such as the insidious aspect of Rahu on Mangala/ Mars in Vrishabha/ Taurus.

With the stresses and shocks precipitated by past events abating and normalcy returning to an extent, it is important to optimise participation in the Karmic fabric laid out for all with the fullest awareness, the core function of the mystic/ spiritual/ religious art.

A BRIEF LOOK AT THE TWELVE LAGNAS/ ASCENDANTS IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

People are often curious at the beginning of their astrological quest, to know something of the various facets pertaining to their ‘chart’; in other words, they wish to evaluate the basic propensities pertaining to their Lagnas and their Rashi/ Lagna Kundalis (Kundalis). Also, the Chandra Lagna itself and Gochar furnish other popular areas of curiosity. Lagna is the sign rising on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth and is occupied by a Rāśi (Rashi)/ Vedic sign. The average duration of a sign rising in the Lagna/ Ascendant is two hours and for this reason the twelve Rāśis cover the twenty-four hours duration of the solar day. ( Basic Jyotiṣa principles can be accessed by clicking this link ) Lagna imbues a person with individuality and therefore denotes the self and the personality of the person. It is the first house or Bhāva of the chart and is the commencement point of any horoscopic study. We cannot forget that in all the divisional charts as well there is a Lagna/...

Vedic Astrology: The Charakaraka Replacement and Its Impact

At its deepest core Jyotiṣa is at the driving centre of all Karma. Just like life, if properly appreciated as it must, it has the status of a full-scale on-going project of immense magnitude. Karma and Soul : The Lagna and the Bhavas reckoned from the Lagna in the Rāśi Chakra indicate the physical manifestation of life. In the Varga Chakra the Lagna and the Bhāvas indicate the personality and realities of that specific environment. When we speak of Karma we inevitably speak of the soul as it is the soul which must carry and exhaust the Karma through rebirth. Charakāraka - Matters pertaining to the soul are studied and deciphered through the Charakāraka in Vedic Astrology. The Charakāraka are the temporal significators (Naisargika Kāraka) for various matters at the level of the soul and the Karma. The Charakāraka are decided on the basis of longitude of arc traversed by the planets including minutes and seconds of arc, and sometimes fractions of seconds of arc. The Eight Cha...

The Yānavaṅta/ Yanavanta/ Annapūrṇā/ Annapurna/ Vāhana/ Vahana Yoga is formed when Venus and Moon/ Śukra and Cañdra/ Shukra and Chandra associate to form a Yoga in the Vedic horoscope; by Vedic horoscope is meant the Rāśi Cakra/ Rashi Chakra and the Varga Chakra as well, the latter being the divisional charts governing specific areas of life such as marriage (Navāmśa/ Navamsha), career (Daśāmśa/ Dashamsha), children (Saptāmśa/ Saptamsha), parents and elders (Dwādaśāmśa/ Dwadashamsha), comforts and luxuries (Ṣodaśāmśa/ Shodashamsha), spirituality and worship (Vimśāmśa/ Vimshamsha), education (Siddhāmśa/ Siddhamsha) etc. Let us consider the immediate meanings of the various terms used to indicate the Yoga formed due to the association of Venus and the Moon.
