In this
article, the subject of food is correlated with the planets and houses in Vedic
astrology, extending amongst other things to dietary significations and methods
of prescribing remedial measures involving food.
WHY FOOD-
Food is necessary for sustenance, in
common parlance. As a necessity it is one of the biggest drivers in life. It is
essential for the body or the Deha/ Tanu.
SIGNIFICATOR OF FOOD-
Moon (Cañdra or Chandra) is the Natural
Significator or the Naisargika Kāraka for food in general, in Vedic astrology.
It is also the Karaka for the mind,
social interaction, fame and flow of things. The Moon is so important that it
is treated as a Lagna in itself called the Janma Rashi (Jañma Rāśi) or the
Chandra (Cañdra) Lagna.
DIETARY POLICIES & FOOD BASED
REMEDIES IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY-
Why should there be any sort of awareness
of a food intake policy or plan? If dietary policies are a valid metaphysical organisation,
then adherence to such a plan would keep the natal Moon, which is Kāraka for
all food, in good order.
Planets in Vedic astrology (the Grahas)
are embodied energies which are alive and subsist in personam. Like
other dynamic and living beings they need food. The Ārūḍha (Arudha) Padas are
similar in that they also need food to exist in the world of Māyā (Maya).
It is this which provides the abiding
rationale for fasting as it transfers the food which would have otherwise come
to the native, to the relevant astrological entity for which the fast is being
undertaken.
Bhāvas (Bhavas) or the houses and the Grahas
placed therein are important determinants for remedial measures.
BODY-
Whatever happens, happens to us while we
occupy the body. Food is essential for the body as recorded earlier. Regulation
of food is thus inextricably linked to the happenings experienced through the
body.
AND MIND-
Since Moon is the Kāraka of both food and
the mind, what we eat impacts the mind. As the body or the Deha is another
signification, the state of the body informs the mind as well.
DASHA (DAŚĀ) AND FOOD-
As planets govern different foods, the
change in the Dasha can radically alter the nature, quality and quantity of
food intake. The Rāśi Daśā (Rashi Dasha or Periods of the signs) irrespective of
the planets placed in them can alter the environs in which food is had. For example,
in a given phase of time one may eat more often at home, and in another, outside.
DASHA AND PHYSICAL APPEARANCE-
The logical corollary is that physical appearance
changes with the change in the Daśā because the food is changing.
GEMSTONES AND FOOD-
The reason for exercising caution in the
prescription of gemstones (Ratnas) is that they directly touch the body (except
the diamond). Therefore it is natural to expect that food which forms,
comprises and sustains the body itself is all important and care in food is a
pre-requisite.
GOOD, BAD AND ABSOLUTELY PROHIBITED-
The various categories of foods for the
individual can be derived from the horoscope and the crucial planets along with
their placement in crucial Bhāvas. Prohibited foods are crucial to identify
because they can be extremely adverse in precipitating adverse Karma which
extends far beyond bodily matters- these can be identified by coalescing the
defining features in specific divisional charts.
FOOD STRATEGY AND CLARITY OF DISTINCTION-
An effective strategy of food intake is
contingent on clarity in distinguishing the roles the planets are playing in
the Vedic horoscope.
Some planet-ruled food is to be ingested
only to be digested and expelled, in order to get the malefic or otherwise impeding
energy represented by the planet, out of the way, while others can be the
affirmative back-bone of the food intake. Some foods can be symbolic
embellishments if the quality or the nature of the food prohibits intake in anything but notional mass owing to
physiological constraints.
DON’T DO IT-
This always ensures that it will in fact
be done and so it is with food.
FOODS SIGNIFIED BY THE PLANETS IN VEDIC
ASTROLOGY-
The food related significations of the
Navagrahas or the nine planets in Vedic astrology are given below. These are
indicative of core sources based on Rasa and the list can be enhanced from
standard sources.
Sun (Surya)- red chillies
Moon (Chandra)- milk, water, rice
Mars (Mangala)- bitter gourd
Mercury (Budha)- green vegetables
Jupiter (Guru)- sweets, clarified butter
Venus (Shukra)- curd, yoghurt
Saturn (Shani)- mustard, alcohol
Rahu- mushrooms, red meat
Ketu- fish
MISCELLANY IN ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES-
Venus rules curd and yoghurt and having power
to revive the dead through the Sanjivani, curd and yoghurt are used in
potentially fatal diseases. There is nothing better to strengthen the immune
system and yet this is not for everybody as indicated in this article above.
It should be no surprise then that the
diamond is similarly used in such situations. Please see the correlations
established above in this paper between the body, food and gemstones.
When it comes to Saturn the difference is
that the planet is ‘the great malefic’ and rules alcohol related problems when
it comes to imbibing. In food stuffs ruled by Saturn a poignant situation
usually emerges akin to a choice between the devil and the deep blue sea. This is
how it was intended. Even so, if Saturn occupies special locations its food and
drink significations cannot be ignored.
