The present state of affairs in the life of a human being is obviously judged from the changeable and dynamic factors in the horoscope. When we ask ‘how are you’ or ‘how are things’, these parts or constituents of the horoscope come to the forefront. In Vedic astrology, the foremost amongst such factors is the Dasha, and more particularly, the lord of the Dasha. This planet is called the Dashanatha in Jyotisha. The Dashanatha is far more important than is ordinarily thought. He is the temporary Lagna during the course of the entire Dasha. Suppose someone has Virgo Lagna and Venus is placed in the 10th Bhava from the Udaya Lagna in Gemini.
